A Garsia Myth?

The myth that the Garsia’s are descended from the son of the Count or Duke of Burgos in Spain.

One of the few pieces of information that the family had about its origins was that it was descended from the son of the Count or Duke of Burgos in northern Spain. This story came down to them through at least two separate lines from Aaron – one from before he married Sarah Ann and the other from Willoughby Marston’s line. At first sight it would seem unlikely that a Jew should have any connection with the Spanish aristocracy. However there are a number of cases where people prominent in Spanish life have turned up in the Caribbean islands and declared themselves Jewish. Another suggestion is that the Duke or Count fell for a Jewish girl in Spain and she had a child by him. On the other hand maybe it is only a myth. Families like to believe they are connected to the aristocracy!

I am grateful to Edna Black for her help in drawing my attention to this.
