John MacMorland was born in 1804, in Maybole, Ayrshire ((Diana Domai said in Oct 2002 that he was born in 1807)). His occupation was that of a weaver ((JGMW noted in his journal:  I think he was a weaver. He was musical and made his own violin. He and Elizabeth had ten children: Jessie, James, Quintin, Lizzie, Mirian, William, Maggie, Nellie, Alex and Ivy. How did he manage to put two of his sons into farms and to give one (Anna’s father) such a good education?  page126.  RWPMW adds: In The Girvan Illustrated Almanac for 1879 the following name appears in the list of inhabitants in the village of Dailly: ‘John Macmorland, weaver and church officer.’ (DOC. 45, RWPMW) )) and church officer, and his first wife was Jane Elliot. They lived in Dailly in Ayrshire. They had three children: Jane, Robert and John.

John MacMorland was married for a second time on 19 Mar 1847 to Elizabeth Bone, in Kirkmichael, Ayrshire and they went on to have ten children: Quintin, Marion, William, Margaret, Ivie, Helen, Alexander, James, Elizabeth and Jessie. ((according to information from Diana Domai provided in Oct. 2002)) Elizabeth was born in 1819 ((Diana Domai says Elizabeth was born in 1820)) daughter of Quintin Bone and Scadlock.

John was Elizabeth’s second husband; her first was called Grant. John and Elizabeth lived in Dailly. Elizabeth died on 18 Oct 1897, at High Craighead farm, Ayrshire and was buried at Daily New Cemetery.

John MacMorland died on 1 Mar 1886, at Daily, Ayrshire, and was buried at Daily New Cemetery.

The IGI internet records show five children ((RWPMW writes: I should check the original film for the others. This is the first time I have been aware of Helen. Note however that Nellie is a diminutive of Helen. (RWPMW 10 Oct 2002). )) of John and Elizabeth thus: William MCMORLAND (b. 21 Jan. 1855), Margaret MCMORLAND (b. c. 18 Mer. 1857), Ivie Willet MCMORLAND (b. 27 Jan. 1859), Helen MCMORLAND (b. 16 Mar. 1816) and Alexander MCMORLAND (b. 11 Mar. 1864).

Elizabeth Bone was grandmother to JGMW’s wife, Anna, and was first married to a man called Grant. They had a daughter Matilda, usually known as Tilly. In Dailly New Cemetery, Ayrshire you will see on John Macmorland’s (R1 and T1) tombstone the following inscription: “His daughter” (actually step-daughter) “Matilda Grant died Crieff 1-5-1893 aged 50 years.” ((JGMW writes: If my memory serves me correctly I think I was told that Matilda had a temperence hotel in Crieff, Perthshire. After Grant died Elizabeth married John Macmorland (R1). (JGMW pp.184 and 186). Elizabeth Bone died at High Craighead, her son Quintin’s (U3) farm, on 18-10-1897 aged 78 and is buried beside her husband, John Macmorland, in Dailly New Cemetery, Ayrshire. (JGMW p.125) ))
